Sustaining Teaching for Mastery

Fluency with Multiplicative Reasoning - New for 2024-25!

Support your Year 7's and develop students' multiplicative reasoning skills...

Sustaining Teaching for Mastery Work Groups are available to all schools that have previously taken part in Development Work Groups, and this year they are offering something new. In 2024/25, participating schools can focus on developing fluency with multiplicative reasoning in KS3. Multiplicative reasoning underpins approximately two thirds of the content of GCSE Maths, and this focus will allow departments to fully understand its implications for KS3 teaching.

This new opportunity to explore developing fluency is open to all schools involved in the Sustaining phase of Teaching for Mastery, which includes any schools who have previously been involved in Development, even if they have taken a break since starting their Mastery journey.

Developing Coherence Across Maths and Science - Year 1

This highly popular Work Group is back in 2024-25 for new joiners. Develop a collaborative approach between maths and science teachers and departments to establish supportive and cohesive methods.

Maths is taught across many different subjects in secondary schools, not least in the science department. Two teachers from each school (one maths and one science) work together to establish similarities and differences in approaches to help develop a cohesive approach for pupils. Collaboration, designed to coordinate when topics are covered, an awareness of methods used and the different contexts in which students meet mathematics should enhance the learning experience for students.

There will be an expectation that one mathematics teacher and one science teacher from each participating school will attend all Work Group sessions. This opportunity is open to all schools involved in the Sustaining phase of Teaching for Mastery, which includes any schools who have previously been involved in Development, even if they have taken a break since starting their Mastery journey.

"The Maths and Science Work Group this year has been fundamental to the growth and development to both departments. The interwoven skills that have been highlighted to us have opened up conversations on shared teaching methods, calculation policies as well as all members of each department championing the other. As a HoD, I have valued the time I have spent with the other department to see where we can make curriculum links and help each other out to get the best results for our school. I loved the WOW moments where I can see the impact of this back in school and both departments are excited to see the results of this!"

Developing Coherence Across Maths and Science - Year 2

For participants who took part in Year 1, the journey continues in order to achieve sustained change and collaborative working across departments. Improvements will continue to be made across maths and science departments, whilst also making natural links to other key curriculum areas.
