5 Catalysts for Change

A true understanding of these ideas will probably come about only after discussion with other teachers and by exploring how the ideas are reflected in day-to-day maths teaching and school culture.

Mathematical Mindsets

Connecting with practices to promote self-efficacy, positivity and self-belief in both staff and pupils. This is underpinned by the key belief that all children can achieve in maths and that ability is not fixed. By having a growth mindset and challenging the labelling of children, classroom practices can begin to embody these beliefs by shifting cultures such as valuing depth of response over speed. Understanding how mindsets of staff can influence pupil’s attitudes to maths.

Subject Expertise

Developing teacher subject expertise in pedagogical content knowledge including curriculum content and sequencing; representations and structure; mathematical thinking and reasoning; and lesson design. Maths Lead will explore and develop effective leadership skills, including how to effect change and develop colleagues.

Systems

Reflecting and refining school systems to encompass the principles of teaching for mastery. This would include considering whole class teaching, the role of the TA, assessment, internal professional development systems, meeting the needs of all learners and effective tracking and assessment.

Arithmetical Proficiency

Understanding the importance of working towards all pupils achieving arithmetical proficiency. Securing age-appropriate number fact knowledge (knowing facts to automaticity with understanding) and developing number sense. Understanding the importance of intelligent practice and developing accuracy, efficiency and flexibility. Ensuring all staff understand the importance of balancing both procedural and conceptual understanding.

Shared Vision and Culture

Collaboratively creating a shared vision for pupils’ experience of mathematics in your school. Embracing a culture conductive to working towards this vision and consistently valuing the vision through beliefs, practices and philosophies. Working towards a common goal.
