Who can take part?

This programme is designed for Primary Teaching Assistants who are supporting maths, and who would like to develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths. This may be particularly relevant for teaching assistants who have not received maths-specific training.

What you need to know:

Participants must attend the equivalent of four days, where they will work collaboratively on maths tasks. Between sessions, participants contribute to their online community, complete school-based tasks, and share their observations through discussions with peers.

What is involved?

This programme is designed to improve the subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge for all practitioners supporting the learning of primary maths.

It supports primary teaching assistants who are supporting maths to develop specialist knowledge for teaching maths, and to develop distinct pedagogical decision-making which will impact on their practice when supporting maths. It takes place over the equivalent of four days.

What will you learn?

• Your pupils will engage positively with maths that challenges them
• You will identify common misconceptions and ways of addressing these to help pupils master important concepts.
• You will develop an understanding of key principles and approaches associated with teaching for mastery.

What is the cost?

This programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so is free to participating schools.

Dates and Venue:

This programme will consist of four face-to-face sessions running from 9am to 2.30pm on the following dates:

• Tuesday 12th January 2027
• Tuesday 16th March 2027
• Tuesday 20th April 2027
• Tuesday 18th May 2027

These sessions will be held at Highbury Primary School, Dovercourt Road, Cosham, Portsmouth, PO6 2RZ
