Teaching for Mastery in a Mixed Age Setting

Our Mixed Age Work Groups support schools with mixed age classes in developing and sustaining effective teaching and learning in maths through a Teaching for Mastery approach. They are designed to provide professional development opportunities with consideration for the challenges of maths teaching in a mixed age setting.

As part of the Work Group the schools will explore the new NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics) curriculum guidance to help mixed age schools to:

  • Make informed decisions about structuring mixed-age classes
  • Adpot clear, sequential learning pathways to support mathematical progression
  • Access high-quality resources tailored for mixed-age teaching
  • Explore practical strategies, case studies, and expert guidance to implement Teaching for Mastery in mixed-age settings

For the 2025/26 academic, the programme has evolved: the introductory phase now runs over two years, giving schools time to build a strong foundation for long-term change. This programme will focus on the Five Catalysts of Change and introduce the Five Big Ideas of Teaching for Mastery alongside the bespoke mixed-age elements. Mixed-age Curriculum | NCETM

What is involved?

Each participating school selects one or two teachers to join a local Work Group, led by an experienced Primary Mastery Specialist. Together with teachers from other mixed age schools, they will:

  • Meet regularly to plan, observe, and reflect on mastery teaching practices
  • Explore and trial approaches in their own classrooms between sessions
  • Receive ongoing support and classroom visits from their Mastery Specialist
  • Explore the new NCETM Mixed-Age Curriculum Mixed-age Curriculum | NCETM

This is a hands-on, evidence-informed programme built on professional collaboration and designed to foster long-lasting change in maths teaching.

Who can take part?

This programme is open to state-funded primary schools in England who have mixed age classes. Each school commits to:

  • Sending at least one teacher to half-termly, school-based research groups
  • Welcoming a termly visit from their Mastery Specialist

Please note: Schools can only take part in this introductory phase once, but other Teaching for Mastery Work Groups are available in subsequent years. Get in touch to explore the options.

What is the cost?

The Introductory Teaching for Mastery Work Groups are fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so provided completely free to participating state-funded schools.

What will you learn?

Teachers and school leaders will:

  • Evaluate and refine their school's systems, culture, and professional development
  • Understand how to apply the Five Catalysts of Change as well as implement the Five Big Ideas in everyday practice
  • Strengthen their maths subject knowledge with a focus on progression and depth

Pupils will:

  • Show improved learning outcomes, backed by school data and teacher reflections
  • Develop greater confidence and enjoyment in maths
