Many children in special school settings are learning mathematics at levels which are earlier than National Curriculum descriptors, some are even pre-numerical and non-verbal, and therefore the Five Big Ideas as they currently stand [may not totally] fit our purpose. Nevertheless, the mathematical world is part of their practical and social lives, and we should therefore aim to help them develop the fundamental roots of mathematical learning that is essential to their lives. (Staves, 2019)
The Solent Maths Hub currently works with 17 special schools in the region, exploring how the Five Big Ideas can be put into practice to meet the bespoke needs of each setting.
