Post 16

Below is a list of the current Post 16 Work Groups. For more information and to book onto a Work Group please click on the relevant drop downs.

CORE MATHS

These Work Groups give teachers opportunities, through collaboration and experimentation, to develop improved teaching approaches that support the open-ended problem-solving skills Core Maths students need to develop, and to share these with departmental colleagues. Participant departments will support the role of Core Maths in promoting contextualised problem-solving and links to teaching in other subject areas.  The Maths Hub and Advanced Maths Support Programme (AMSP) work collaboratively to deliver projects in this area.

Feedback from participants:

“Interesting discussion on how teaching CM is different from A Level teaching:

  • More flexible SOW - not as pressured

  • Adapt teaching to current news stories, topics of interest etc

  • Students need more general knowledge

  • More links to other subjects eg data, finance etc

  • Different approach - more focus on context which suits some more than others

  • We know the students will use the skills and knowledge later in life - great!”

“It has been so useful hearing other teacher's ideas and made me teach more creatively. It also made me confident that I had covered everything.”

“Discussing teaching strategies was very helpful and sharing resources as well. It gave me many ideas that I can try in class or online.”

Please note: When booking onto our Work Groups, participants will need their teacher reference number (TRN).  If you need support to find your TRN, please follow this guidance: Teacher reference number (TRN) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

IF YOU HAVEN'T ATTENDED PREVIOUS SESSIONS, WE MAY STILL BE ABLE TO ALLOCATE YOU A PLACE ON THE FUTURE WORK GROUPS. PLEASE EMAIL INFO@MATHSHUBSOLENT.ORG.UK AND WE WILL TRY AND ACCOMMODATE YOU.

DEVELOPING A LEVEL PEDAGOGY

This project provides national support for the effective development of pedagogy in the teaching of A level Mathematics to support Covid recovery, to enhance the quality of teaching and the conceptual understanding of students, and the development of participants as leaders of A level teaching professional development in their own school or college.  This Work Groups aim to develop and sustain local communities of practice involving collaboration between teachers in developing pedagogy in their teaching of A level Mathematics.

Feedback from participants:

“It has been interesting to see some of the possibilities and opportunities that online teaching brings.”

“Helped to provide ideas for better ways to assess students as well as insight into tools to quickly identify common misconceptions.”

What is involved?

As we would like to adapt this group to the needs of the participants, we have only set the time and date for the initial session.  From there, we will set dates according to the availability of the group.

Tuesday 14th December 2021, 3-5pm.

It will be a blended session, with a face to face option hosted at UTC Portsmouth as well as an option to join via an online meeting.

SUPPORTING GCSE RE-SIT

The Maths Hub has not run this Work Group for a number of years, however due to local requests we have re-introduced the group to our local offer.  This Work Group will explore effective ways of teaching key content to GCSE resit students in the context of Covid recovery. Participants will, through collaboration and experimentation, deepen their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum demands of GCSE Maths and their awareness of pedagogical approaches that best support students taking GCSE for the second time.

Participants will:

  • improve their awareness of key concepts and themes relevant to the context of the GCSE resit

  • increase their awareness of appropriate pedagogies to help students make connections and deepen understanding

  • increase their understanding of ways of working within this sector.

This programme will take place on the following dates

28 JANUARY 2022 Time: 1pm - 3pm Session will take place at Fareham College (Working Lunch provided)
