This Work Group aims to increase awareness of the needs of pupils with SEND, to include those with unidentified needs, through to those with EHCPs. It is packed with lots of practical strategies for supporting engagement and enabling greater success in mathematics.
Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate and share ideas and challenges throughout. Ideas will be trialed back in school with particular learners in mind, leading to an evidence trail of how teaching has impacted on pupil progress.
This Work Group is aimed at primary and secondary teachers, SENCOs and SLT from mainstream schools.

The programme is aligned to the NCETM Teaching for Mastery principles and is based on six key themes:
- Structure of the number system
- Operating on number
- Multiplicative reasoning
- Sequences and graphs
- Statistics and probability
- Geometry.
Participants will explore these themes, supported by an experienced secondary practitioner.
This group is free for all teachers and school involved.
Who can take part?
This programme is for non-specialist teachers of maths in state-funded schools who fit the following definition:
A non-specialist teacher of mathematics is ‘a teacher that is currently teaching some mathematics who has not undertaken initial teacher training (ITT) in mathematics’.
If there is sufficient space in the cohort, other teachers of maths who do not fit this definition but would benefit from this support may also participate.

This Work Group will focus on number patterns and structures in early years, exploring the developmental trajectory for learning in counting and cardinality. A key focus will be on improving the participants’ ability to “do” mathematics but also to ensure they have the appropriate pedagogical knowledge to teach their children well.
Pupils will:
- Have increased opportunities to explore concepts at a developmentally appropriate level
- Be able to communicate their maths and mathematical thinking through graphical representations and/or appropriate language
- Demonstrate a positive attitude towards maths, being willing to have a go, persevere, and share their mathematical ideas

The aim of this community is to work deeply on one area of maths, drawing in the associated pedagogy, and will include lesson analysis and lesson design.
Participants will:
plan and teach a carefully sequenced and coherent area of maths
appreciate the key ideas underpinning the area of maths being taught
understand key principles and approaches associated with teaching for mastery
understand approaches to assess pupils’ prior learning, so that learning sequences take this into account
make appropriate use of representations to expose the structure of the maths being taught.
observe experienced teachers in Maths, analysing the pedagogy.

14 June 2024 - 14 June 202409:00 - 16:00The Training and Learning Centre, The Portsmouth Academy, St Mary's Road, Portsmouth, PO1 5PF£0.00This project aims to strengthen the transition from primary to secondary school by focusing on curriculum and continuity over Years 5 to 8. Following the disruption to education caused by the Covid crisis, this transition is more crucial than ever. Central to the Work Group is the promotion of cross phase communication between teachers to address issues of maths curriculum and pedagogical transition as distinct from pastoral considerations. A key feature will be understanding how best to prioritise key aspects of the curriculum to help ensure pupils have mastered the fundamental understanding and skills they need to underpin their progression through upper KS2 and into KS3.
Linked ‘families’ of schools are encouraged to take part: ideally teachers from secondary schools and some of their associated primary schools will work together. Multi-academy trusts could encourage groups of their schools to take part, in order to support collaboration across the KS2-3 transition. We will support schools to make links with their linked primary or secondary where possible.
